Reasons to Vaccinate

We all know the importance of car seats, baby gates and other ways to keep our children safe. Making sure your child is up to date on all vaccines is the best way to protect not only your child, but others from contracting a potential deadly disease.
Below are five important reasons to vaccinate (immunize, or get shots)
  1. Vaccines can save your child’s life.  Polio is one example of the impact vaccines has had in the United States.  Thanks to vaccination, there are no reports of polio in the US.
  2. Vaccination is safe and effective.  Vaccines go through many tests and reviews by scientists, doctors, and health care professionals.  Vaccines can cause pain at the injection site, redness, and tenderness.  This is minor compared to the pain and potential deadly effects of diseases vaccines prevent.
  3. Vaccines protects others you care about and those you may not know.  There are some individuals, due to an immune disorder etc., who may not be able to get vaccines and are very susceptible to the disease.  By vaccinating, you help create what is called “herd immunity” meaning the more individuals who are vaccinated will help protect those who are not or cannot be vaccinated from getting the disease
  4. Immunizations can save your family time and money.  A child with a vaccine preventable disease will not be allowed to be school or day care center.  Some vaccine preventable diseases can cause long-term disabilities.
  5. Immunizations protect future generations. By vaccinating against certain vaccine preventable disease while pregnant will help protect the unborn baby.

Vaccine FAQ's
  • What diseases do vaccines prevent? Vaccines prevent diseases such as measles, whooping cough, influenza, and many more.
  • Are vaccines safe? Vaccines are studied in clinical trials and tested on thousands of people before they are approved to be used on the public, after they are approved the CDC will conduct more safety studies to continuously monitor the vaccines safety.
  • Do vaccines really work?  Yes, they do, thanks to vaccines more than 14 diseases that were once common in the U.S. are now rarely seen.
  • Why should I vaccinate my child?  By vaccinating your child, you can help to protect him/her from serious illnesses and complications that come with those diseases such as hearing loss, brain damage, pneumonia, and even death.
  • How do vaccines work? Vaccines work by imitating an infection to teaching our immune system how to fight off that specific infection.
  • Do vaccines cause autism? The American Academy of Pediatrics, the CDC, and many more organizations have done extensive research and they have found that there is no link to autism.
  • Can my child get more than one vaccine at a time? Years of research have shown that children's immune systems can tolerate multiple vaccines at a time and the side effects are not increased.
  • Do vaccines have side effects? Many side effects that come from getting a vaccine are minor, such as a sore arm or low-grade fever. These side effects normally go away in a few days.
  • What is in vaccines? Every ingredient in vaccines has a purpose. The ingredients provide immunity, keep the vaccine safe and long lasting, and makes the vaccine more effective.
  • Can I refuse to vaccinate my child due to my religion? Yes, you can refuse to vaccinate your child because of your religion, but it is important that you are aware of the risks of not vaccinating your child.
