FDA Approves the Updated COVID-19 Vaccine
As of August 22nd, 2024, the FDA approved the use for the updated COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 formula).
The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have been updated with this formula to more closely target currently circulating variants and provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death.
“Vaccination continues to be the cornerstone of COVID-19 prevention,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “These updated vaccines meet the agency’s rigorous, scientific standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality. Given waning immunity of the population from previous exposure to the virus and from prior vaccination, we strongly encourage those who are eligible to consider receiving an updated COVID-19 vaccine to provide better protection against currently circulating variants.”

CDC Recommendations for Getting the 2024-45 Updated COVID-19 Vaccine
The CDC recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get the updated vaccine. To be considered up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccines:
-Children ages 6 months to 4 years should receive all recommended doses, including at least one dose of an updated COVID-19 vaccine.
-Everyone ages 5 and older should receive one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if it’s been at least 2 months since your last dose.
If you recently had COVID-19, you may consider waiting up to three months to get the updated vaccine.
ADDITIONAL DOSES: In December of 2024, the CDC recommended that people ages 65 and older, and people ages 6 months and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised should get at least 2 doses of the 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine 6 months apart. While it is recommended by the CDC to get 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine doses 6 months apart, the minimum time is 2 months apart, which allows flexibility to get the second dose prior to typical COVID-19 surges, travel, life events, and healthcare visits. Talk with your healthcare provider to see what is recommended for you.
