Falls Among Older Adults - Injury Prevention

This program is funded by a grant from the Ohio Department of Health utilizing federal funds from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant (93.991).

The Older Adult Fall Prevention program at the Tuscarawas County Health Department is dedicated to reducing unintentional falls and fall-related fatalities among older adults.

If your agency or facility would like to host one of our balance and mobility classes listed below, please reach out to Abigale Rogers, Fall Prevention Coordinator.

In the coming years, TCHD will work closely with community partners to provide a variety of free resources for older adults, including evidence-based exercise programs for older adults and healthcare providers in Tuscarawas County, including but not limited to:

 For Older Adults:
  • Bingocize – Combines light stretching, exercising and bingo (and bingo prizes)!
  • Walk With Ease – A 6-week walking program designed to provide light exercise and social interaction.
  • Matter of Balance – A 4-week balance and mobility program that is designed to reduce the fear of falling while increasing activity levels in older adults.
  • Tai Chi – An 8 or 16-week program that provides easy to follow stretches and Tai Chi moves that provide:
  • Improved balance and mobility
  • Improved strength and flexibility
  • Improved relaxation
  • Decreased pain and falls
  • Fall Risk Assessments – TCHD will be able to perform an in-home fall risk assessment (by request only) to determine ways to help reduce your personal risk of falling, or environmental changes that may prevent falls.
For providers:
  • STEADI training – STEADI training is a free, virtual training that promotes open discussion regarding older adult falls and provides a framework for healthcare professionals to ask the right questions in their assessments regarding fall risks, fear, and mobility in the home. STEADI also provides clear guidelines for referring clients and patients based on findings from the short assessments.
