Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) Program
The Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) program, funded by the Ohio Department of Health, supports local efforts to improve access to nutritious food, encourage physical activity, and build healthier environments. The Tuscarawas County Health Department is one of 31 organizations across Ohio awarded this grant, with this year’s focus on Newcomerstown.
As part of the initiative, blessing boxes filled with free nonperishable food and hygiene items have been placed at Victory Assembly of God and Newcomerstown Middle School as of August 12. A third box will be installed at the Newcomerstown Public Library. These boxes are designed to provide immediate support to residents in need and are stocked with items such as canned goods, toothpaste, and other essentials.
The CHC program also focuses on creating long-term environmental changes that support healthier lifestyles. In Newcomerstown, this includes enhancements to Simonds-Heller Park, such as trail markers, message centers, and exercise panels. These panels offer simple, guided movements that encourage visitors to stretch, strengthen, and stay active while enjoying the outdoors. The upgrades aim to make the park more welcoming and accessible, promoting regular physical activity for residents of all ages.
